Remember...
...your first experiences in the kitchen when you were a child? Maybe your first memory is of helping your mom measure the flour for chocolate chip cookies, or frosting a moist, delicious cake with your grandmother – or maybe you even recall being allowed to lick the chocolatey goodness off the big mixing spoon. Whatever your fondest memories are, the warmth, the familiar smells, the aromas and the special moments you shared while baking with your parents all fused together to form lasting, loving family memories.
TimeToTalk.org and Hershey want to help you create those sweet family moments and fond memories with your own children, grandchildren, or nieces and nephews. Baking with children is a wonderful way to teach, share, and connect with kids and we encourage you to have some Sweet Talk with your kids while baking delicious yummy treats!
Create Conversation Opportunities Through Fun Baking Activities
Baking provides a unique opportunity to connect with your kids, learn more about them
and have open, honest conversations about different things, while engaging in fun baking activities. Not only is baking an enjoyable family activity, but it helps kids learn patience, precision, math and
organizational skills and how to follow directions, while piquing their curiosity. Parents can take the time to talk with their kids about many topics to help keep them safe, healthy and happy!
Parents You Are the Influence!
It is a surprise to many parents that they are the most powerful influence in a child's life — greater than peers, popular music, television, celebrities and the media! Partnership research consistently shows that kids who learn a lot about the risks of drugs from their parents are up to 50 percent less likely to use drugs and alcohol than those who do not; yet, only 30 percent of teens report learning a lot from their parents.
Talking to your kids about the risks of drugs and alcohol isn't as hard as you think. We're here to help make talking even easier. We've got free, easy-to-use, research-based tools and tips to help you have ongoing conversations with your kids to keep them healthy and drug-free.

Teachable Moments
The kitchen offers endless opportunities for getting together, so while you're checking out recipes, mixing and baking chocolate treats together, you
can catch up on your children's busy lives, and also talk about some serious subjects in a relaxed setting. Parents and caregivers can turn baking delicious desserts with their families into Teachable Moments that encourage children to make good choices for themselves. While it's important to talk to your children about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse in order to safeguard them from these risky behaviors, the best recipe for open honest communication with your kids is equal parts listening and learning from the cues your children give you.
